Over 30 vulnerable children in Kenya became photographers-for-a-day in the summer of 2014 when I visited the Kaaga Synod. Armed with a camera, which most had never before held, and the knowledge that only they could tell the story of their Kenya, they went home for the day and photographed their families, their friends, their homes, their lives. Later, they provided me with descriptions of their photos and further details about their lives. Some were happy tales, many were sad.
Their stories are waiting to be told. The book is almost written. There are pictures which the average traveler to Kenya, even the average Kenyan teacher or resident never sees. My photographers captured beauty and sorrow. Despite the squalor, the images and the children’s words have much hope.
We need your help to show the world this side of Kenya, this perspective of vulnerability. Publishing the book My Kenya: Changing Vulnerable Children’s Reality into Their Dreams will cost money. The book, and these children’s stories will remain on a hard drive, their story unread and their lives still hidden until enough money is raised to have the books printed and published. Once the books are published, every dime will go to Changing Lenses, Changing Lives. I will not accept any royalties from its sale or distribution.
In readers’ hands, My Kenya: Changing Vulnerable Children’s Reality into Their Dreams will bring about awareness of the vulnerable child’s plight. Hopefully it will also provide sponsorships and donations to help these children change their reality and achieve their dreams.
As we at Changing Lenses, Changing Lives seek to find sponsors for children, we are committed to obtaining support first for the photographers and other children who opened up their homes and lives to us. After they are sponsored, we will begin to seek donors for thousands of others waiting for a chance.
Please help by donating a minimum of $50 toward publication of our book. For your generous donation, you will receive an autographed copy of My Kenya: Changing Vulnerable Children’s Reality into Their Dreams shipped directly to your home as soon as it is published. Due to a 3% transaction fee from using PayPal, we would prefer to receive payments via a mailed check to maximize your donation.
