YVONNE KARIMI
Imagine a childhood where you rarely saw your parents. This is the reality of Yvonne, an eighteen-year-old girl, and her elder sister. In the pursuit of prosperity, better education and living standards for her children, Yvonne was left under the care of her elder sister, who had just concluded her own secondary education in 2016. Before that, they were both under the care of one of their relatives, who took care of them on behalf of their single mother, who had traveled to Kenya’s capital city, Nairobi, to seek employment.
Although the mother hoped that by traveling to the city she would find work that would help her send some money back to her children to support their education, health, and house rent, she did not secure a good job as expected. As a result, her children were raised in poverty and struggled to access quality education. For the mother, it was heartbreaking to leave her children behind, and it was even more embarrassing that her sacrifice did not pay off as anticipated. Yvonne was frequently sent home for school fees and lacked sufficient school uniforms and materials, as well as access to a balanced diet.
Since 2018, Changing Lenses, Changing Lives has remained a beacon of hope for Yvonne and her family after her sponsorship. She was offered an opportunity to access quality and uninterrupted education as her school fees were paid on time, both at the primary and high school levels. Beyond school fees, her sponsorship removed the financial burden of purchasing school uniforms, books, and other educational necessities from her family, which made it possible for Yvonne to attend school regularly and concentrate on her academics. Due to her sponsorship, determination and hard work, she emerged among the top pupils in her school during the 8th-grade examination and joined Makuri Girls, where she also worked very hard to attain a B (Plain) in the just concluded KCSE (Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education) examination.
She would like to pursue a law degree, as it has been her lifetime dream to become an attorney to advocate for the needy in her society. Without the support of CLCL, Yvonne cannot achieve this dream or join any other institution of higher learning due to financial constraints. In this regard, Yvonne needs your support as a sponsor to achieve her dream. Alternatively, you can make a donation that will enable her access to a quality university education and empower her to end the poverty cycle in her family. Her future looks brighter with you in it!
